Eventually, Goldstein spoke to Ford and sold him the role
When Brett Goldstein, Jason Segel, and Bill Lawrence were asked how they got Harrison Ford on the show, Segel said that Goldstein originally wanted a “Harrison Ford type” and was prepared to audition for people like Ford. Segel told Goldstein that they should at least take it to Ford first, because they thought he would immediately reject it, but at least others would hear that Harrison Ford was involved in the project, which also piqued the interest of other major actors.
It’s pure and simple entertainment
Goldstein still doesn’t understand what he did to convince her, but he cheered nonetheless. Cleanly written, great one-liners, enough pathos to keep it from becoming The Big Bang Theory for the middle class, it’s a joy to watch.
Are some of the characters stereotypical?
Yes, real therapists wouldn’t act like that, but anyone with a functioning brain cell knows that criticism in this regard is just negativity to drive down ratings. Yes, but you can’t be offended and no one should be tolerated, FYI, I worked with a gay guy who was exactly the stereotype presented here.
Finally, who knew Harrison Ford was such a great light-hearted comedic actor?
The real success here is combining the seriousness of therapy and grief with the growing pains of life at different ages, stages of life, and walks of life, and making it damn funny. He’s a total revelation, and the show is worth watching for him alone.
